It is that time of year again for those who suffer from Spring allergies. As our lawns turn green and trees begin to bloom, many of us are left with red irritated eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, congestion, and generally feeling tired and miserable due to allergies.
While there are pharmaceutical treatments out there, as prescription or over-the-counter medications, natural remedies may also help.
Natural Remedies for Treating Allergies
Avoid the Allergen
This may be easier said than done, especially if you are unsure what causes your symptoms. However, if you know your allergies are triggered outdoors, do your best to stay inside when pollen counts are high. Pollen count data is often reported during your local weather report. Additionally, keep your windows closed to prevent outdoor allergens from getting inside. If you have significant allergies and plans to be outdoors, consider wearing an N95 mask while doing tasks such as mowing the yard.
Saline Nasal Irrigation
A nasal rinse physically flushes out allergens and can help alleviate symptoms. You need to use distilled or sterile water. This may be purchased in stores. Or you can prepare your own by boiling tap water for 3 to 5 minutes, then cool until lukewarm. This is very important to avoid the introduction of undesirable bacteria into the nasal passages and sinuses.
Air Filters
Using indoor air filters or purification systems may help “catch” allergens floating around inside. Remember to replace the filters in your air purifier regularly.
Showering After Outdoors
Again, if your symptoms are triggered by being outdoors, it is beneficial to shower and change clothes after coming inside to remove any allergens.
Vitamin C
When taken during allergy season, vitamin C can slow down your body's overreaction to environmental triggers by decreasing your body's histamine production. Foods high in vitamin C include; citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, white potatoes, and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.)
