When it comes to welcoming your new baby into the family, many decisions need to be made. It all may feel overwhelming, but we know that and are here to help!

Planning for Your New Baby

Prenatal Care

One of the most important decisions is choosing your prenatal care doctor. Many of our physicians at Northwest Family Clinics can serve, not only as your primary care physician, but can also provide prenatal care and deliver your baby.  Our family doctors who deliver babies play a unique role of caring for you at each prenatal visit before you deliver, and often the same doctor will be there to deliver your baby and care for both of you after delivery.  It’s a service Northwest Family has worked hard to preserve.  The best place to start is to discuss your options with your current physician.

Baby Gear

Here is a list of common supplies needed to care for your new baby. These items may be slightly different for each family depending on parenting preferences.

  • Infant car seat (rear-facing for the first 2 years)
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Baby bedding (such as fitted sheets and a mattress protector)
  • Baby wraps and blankets
  • Soft baby towels and cloths
  • Baby soap
  • Thermometer
  • Moisturizing creams/lotions
  • Baby nail clippers
  • Crib or bassinet
  • Clothing
  • Pacifiers
  • Bottle supplies (bottles, rings, nipples)
  • Breast pump with supplies
  • Formula for mothers who choose not to breastfeed

Please note this is not a comprehensive list. These are the main items most parents should have before bringing their new baby home. Some parents may want to purchase additional items such as swing to rock baby, a mobile to hang over a crip, a playmat for the floor, a diaper changing table, or some newborn toys.

The Family

If this is not your first baby, your child/ren will need communication around what it means to bring a new baby into the home. If you have other family members in the house, it is time to start communicating expectations. Things will change once your new baby arrives, and it’s important to help prepare your family for these changes.

Potential Dangers

Before the baby arrives, it is time to start looking at your home for hazards. Here are some potential dangers to consider:

  • Sleep Environment – Talk with your doctor more about this but, in general, it is recommended for babies to sleep on their back in a crib or basinet that is free of bumpers, extra pillow or extra blankets.  The temperature of the baby’s room should be kept at average room temperature such at 70-72 degrees.  Babies 0-2 months old also like to be swaddled for bedtime.  We also recommend clothes that fit baby snuggly.  Baby should be warm but not too warm.

  • Changing Area - Even the smallest baby can roll off a changing table. Ensure your changing area has a railing and/or straps to secure the baby. Never leave your baby alone on a changing table.

  • Location of Baby Furniture - Keep cribs and changing tables away from windows, window cords, and hanging mobiles to prevent your child from getting tangled, suffocating, or falling out the window.

  • Tripping Hazards – While carrying the baby, try to keep walking areas clear to avoid any potential trips or falls.
