Staying Healthy Over the Holidays

As the holiday season arrives in Minnesota, so do the festive gatherings, family celebrations, and chilly winter weather. While this time of year brings joy and togetherness, it also brings an increased risk of illness. With more social outings and cozy hugs from loved ones, you're exposed to a variety of germs—and the colder weather can affect your immune system. But don’t worry, there are simple steps you can take to stay healthy during the holidays!

Protect Yourself from Illness This Holiday Season

1. Get Your Flu and COVID-19 Shots

If you haven’t gotten your flu or COVID-19 shots yet, it’s not too late! These vaccines are one of the best ways to protect yourself from two common illnesses, especially during the holiday season when gatherings can increase your exposure to germs. You can learn more about the flu vaccine and its benefits here

2. Handwashing: Your First Line of Defense

One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness is by washing your hands. Regular handwashing can stop the transmission of harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause colds, the flu, or other infections. 3. Use Hand Sanitizer

When soap and water aren’t readily available, hand sanitizer is your next best option. According to the CDC, using a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol can help reduce the number of germs on your hands, although it won’t eliminate all types of germs or chemicals. Keeping a small bottle of sanitizer with you during holiday outings can help decrease your risk of illness when washing isn’t an option.

4. Focus on Nutrition and Hydration

What you eat and drink plays a big role in how well your immune system functions. Keep your body fueled with nutrient-dense, whole foods, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. While holiday treats are fun, maintaining a balanced diet can give your immune system the boost it needs to keep you feeling your best.

5. Wear a Mask

Whether you are a bit under the weather or will be in close proximity to many other people, you may want to consider masking up to prevent getting others sick or to help decrease your exposure to unwanted germs.

Take-Home Message for Staying Healthy Over the Holidays

The holiday season can expose you to more germs, and cold weather can challenge your immune system. But by taking simple precautions—like getting your flu shot, washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, and maintaining a nutritious diet—you can reduce your risk of getting sick. And of course, remember to keep handwashing at the top of your to-do list this holiday season.

From all of us at Northwest Family Clinics, we wish you a happy, healthy holiday season!
