As your kids head back to school, not only will they be bringing homework home with them, but they will also be bringing a plethora of germs with them. While the pandemic has increased the awareness and importance of handwashing, it’s important to remind our children of the importance of certain steps they can take to prevent illness.
Tips to Stay Healthy as the Kids Head Back-to-School
Handwashing
To get your children to wash their hands when you are not around, you need to instill good handwashing behavior at home. Set a good example and teach them the importance of washing their hands; why, how, when, and where. Wash for a full 20 seconds to remove the most germs. You can learn more about handwashing here.
Use a Tissue
Teach your children at a young age how and when to use facial tissue. When their nose itches or begins to run grab a tissue, rather than using their sleeve or their neighbor’s.
Hand Sanitizer
When running water is not available, teach them how to safely use hand sanitizer. This is almost as effective as washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Regular Check-Ups
Regular doctor visits are important. These visits are your opportunity to ask the doctor questions and potentially detect health issues for your child. Learn more here.
Physical Activity
Keeping your children physically active is important for their overall health. Children should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. You can learn more about the importance of physical activity here.
Healthy Eating
Your children are growing and need specific nutrients to ensure they are developing properly. Keep it simple by aiming to get them to eat a wide variety of whole foods - think the outside aisles of the grocery store.
Keeping Your Children Healthy
Our children are important, and it is our responsibility as parents to keep them healthy. You don’t have to do it alone. Your doctor is a great resource. Be sure to come prepared for your next checkup with any questions you may have.
